Self Storage Guidelines

Sometimes in your life, you may need to store some or all of your belongings. You want to move to your new home or simply you want to declutter your home.

When you’re in one of these situations, the first thing that comes to your mind is to search and hire a local self-storage facility. You find a secure local facility, sign the paperwork, pay for the rent, and then move your stuff.

However, you must be careful not to run into several mishaps in storing your items. Here are the mistakes that you shall not commit when you’re using a self-storage service:

The right storage unit size

Once you have all the stuff that needs to be stored…. Take your time to pack it in carefully and have some extra space in case you wish to sort through the items later on.

Storing with no plan

Your items are now in a safe space. Meaning that you don’t have to worry about the stuff you don’t currently need but still want to keep.

Easy access to an item that is in storage and that you may wish to collect and use - is best achieved by planning the way you pack your goods.

You can position items that you might need in the near future in front of the unit. Consider leaving an access path inside your unit.

Try to label each box of your items and keep an inventory of items in the storage. Therefore, you have a list of all of the items and where they are in the storage unit.

Rhodes Self Storage have a great history of ensuring that your stored belongings are safe from any harm.

But you should be aware about Murphy’s Law. This adage states that “anything that can go wrong will go wrong”. This, of course, also applies to goods in storage.

As storage facilities are not liable for damaged, lost, or stolen items, it is advisable to protect your stored property with insurance. You can consult your trusted insurance company or arrange an insurance coverage with Rhodes Self Storage.

Storing “forbidden” things

You’ve found the facility for self-storage service. Thus, a storage unit is available for you to put all your items. But this doesn’t mean you can store everything as you like. There are several types of items that can cause collateral damage to your property. These are the “forbidden” things you shouldn’t place in your unit.

  • Hazardous materials: The name speaks for itself. Chemicals, propane, or other dangerous materials will potentially cause damage to your items.

  • Food: Not as dangerous as the first point, but it is not advisable for you to put any food in your storage unit. Decayed food can rot and mouldy, thus damaging your other items.

  • Plants: Storage unit is not an ideal place for your plants because it needs light exposure and water. Same as food, plants can rot.

  • Pets: Never leave your pet or other living creatures in your rented unit. Your pets need nutrition and care.

Selecting a storage facility is not all about price.

It is wise to choose a facility that is suitable for your budget. But you really have to make sure that your chosen facility can provide the standard of service you require…. Whether that is for your personal belongings or business goods.
